Temperature Surge and Heatwave Conditions
Delhi witnessed intense heat during Thursday–Friday, with temperatures soaring significantly above normal levels. According to the India Meteorological Department, the Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 41.9°C, which is about 4.2°C above normal. This indicates a strong deviation from usual weather patterns. Meanwhile, the East Ridge nodal station reported an even higher temperature of 43.1°C, officially confirming heatwave conditions in parts of the city. Such extreme heat not only increases discomfort but also poses serious health risks, especially for children, elderly people, and those working outdoors.
Yellow Alert and Weather Forecast
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Saturday, signaling the need for caution among residents. Under this alert, isolated heatwave conditions are expected across different parts of Delhi–NCR, with temperatures likely to remain in the range of 42–44°C. However, there is a slight relief expected in the coming days. Weather experts suggest that between April 26–28, parts of northwest India may receive light rainfall or drizzle, which could help bring down temperatures slightly and provide temporary respite from the ongoing heatwave.
Safety Advisory for Residents
In such extreme weather conditions, taking precautions becomes essential to avoid heat-related illnesses. People are advised to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours (12 PM to 4 PM) when the heat is most intense. Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes can help keep the body cool. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fluids like lemonade, buttermilk, or juices is crucial to prevent dehydration. It is also recommended to use umbrellas, hats, or sunglasses while going out in the sun. If symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, headache, or nausea occur, immediate rest and medical attention should be sought, as these may be early signs of heatstroke.
