Why was the leave restriction imposed?
To ensure the fairness and integrity of NEET UG 2026, the National Medical Commission (NMC), under directions from the Department of Higher Education (DoHE), has decided that medical students across India will not be granted leave on May 2 and 3, 2026, except under exceptional circumstances. This decision comes after past incidents where proxy candidates and solver gangs were involved in cheating during NEET UG 2024, including cases of impersonation and paper leaks.
Background: Cheating Cases in NEET UG 2024
During NEET UG 2024, several cases surfaced where medical students allegedly appeared as proxy candidates for others or were linked to organized cheating networks. These “solver gangs” reportedly leaked question papers and sold answers, leading to multiple arrests by central investigative agencies. These incidents raised serious concerns about exam security, prompting stricter preventive measures for 2026.
What does the new rule say?
According to the official notice issued on April 23, 2026, the NMC has directed all medical colleges that:
- No leave should be granted to MBBS and BDS students on May 2–3, 2026
- Leave can only be given in exceptional and justified cases, with proper documentation
- The rule applies to all medical students, regardless of whether they are appearing for NEET UG or not
The main objective is to ensure that no medical student is available to act as a proxy candidate during the exam.
Impact on Medical Students
This directive means that medical students must remain present in their colleges or classes on the specified dates. If a student needs leave due to serious reasons such as illness or a family emergency, they must provide valid proof and documentation. This step is aimed at reducing the chances of impersonation and maintaining strict monitoring during the exam period.
Strict Warning Against Malpractice
Both NMC and DoHE have instructed colleges to sensitize students about the consequences of cheating. Students found involved in malpractice such as proxy attendance or paper leaks may face:
- Exam bans for up to 3 years
- Cancellation of results
- Criminal proceedings
This reflects the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward exam fraud.
