What is the Case?
Salim Vastik, also known as Salim Khan, was arrested by Delhi Police Crime Branch from Ghaziabad. He had been convicted in a 1995 kidnapping and murder case and was sentenced to life imprisonment but had been absconding for over two decades after jumping bail.
The 1995 Kidnapping & Murder
On January 20, 1995, the accused allegedly used his position as a martial arts instructor to abduct 13-year-old Sandeep Bansal. He later demanded a ransom of ₹30,000 from the family. When the payment was delayed, he murdered the child and hid the body. During investigation, he confessed, and the body was recovered based on his disclosure.
Conviction and Escape
In 1997, a court sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, in 2000, he got interim bail from the Delhi High Court and never returned. In 2011, the court upheld his sentence and declared him a proclaimed offender.
Living Under a New Identity
While on the run, he changed his identity to “Salim Vastik” and became active on social media as an “Ex-Muslim” YouTuber. He posted controversial content on religion and social issues, gaining attention while hiding his criminal past.
How Police Tracked Him
Recently, after an alleged attack on him sparked online discussions about his identity, Delhi Police revisited old records. Using fingerprints and photographs, they confirmed that Salim Khan and Salim Vastik were the same person. He was then arrested from his residence in Loni.
What Happens Next?
Police will now bring him to Delhi to complete the legal process and ensure he serves his life sentence in the 1995 murder case along with any other pending charges.
