India has taken a major step toward modern warfare with the unveiling of next-generation Advanced Armoured Platforms (AAPs) by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These platforms are specifically designed to operate in some of the toughest environments, including the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, arid desert zones, and riverine terrains. The goal is to provide the Indian Armed Forces with vehicles that can perform efficiently across multiple battle scenarios, ensuring preparedness for modern and hybrid warfare conditions.
Dual Design Advantage: Tailored for Every Terrain
The AAPs come in two distinct variants—tracked and wheeled—each engineered for specific operational needs. The tracked version is optimized for mountainous and uneven terrains, offering better grip and stability in areas where traditional vehicles struggle to move. This makes it highly suitable for regions like Ladakh. On the other hand, the wheeled variant focuses on speed and agility, allowing rapid deployment across deserts and plains. This dual-approach design ensures that the military has the flexibility to choose the right platform depending on the battlefield conditions.
Amphibious Edge: Crossing Water Without Barriers
A key highlight of these platforms is their amphibious capability, which allows them to seamlessly transition from land to water. Equipped with hydro jets, these vehicles can cross rivers, lakes, and flooded areas without requiring bridges or additional support infrastructure. This feature significantly enhances operational continuity during combat, especially in regions where natural obstacles could otherwise slow down troop movement or disrupt mission timelines.

The Advanced Armoured Platforms are equipped with a 30mm crewless turret, enabling remote-controlled weapon operations that reduce direct exposure of soldiers to enemy fire. They also have the capability to launch anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), making them highly effective against heavily armored enemy targets. Additionally, the integration of a 7.62mm PKT machine gun ensures strong close-range combat capability. Survivability is a critical aspect of modern military vehicles, and these platforms are designed with high-level protection standards. With STANAG Level 4 and 5 ballistic and blast protection, they can withstand heavy machine gun fire, explosions, and artillery threats. Indigenous Innovation: Boost to Self-Reliant Defense Manufacturing
The platforms are based on the Vikram VT21, developed by DRDO’s VRDE lab in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Bharat Forge Limited. Currently, around 65% of the components are indigenously developed, with plans to increase this to 90% in the future. This initiative aligns with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, reducing dependency on foreign defense imports and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Each of these platforms can carry 8 to 10 fully equipped soldiers, enabling safe and rapid troop transportation. This capability ensures that soldiers can be deployed quickly into combat zones while remaining protected from external threats.
