Background: Why Was a Ceasefire Needed?

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have existed for years, with frequent cross-border clashes, rocket attacks, and retaliatory airstrikes. To prevent the situation from turning into a full-scale war, both sides agreed to a ceasefire. The primary aim was to stabilize the border region and protect civilians living in conflict-prone areas.

 Phase 1: Initial Calm After Ceasefire

In the early days following the ceasefire, the situation appeared relatively stable. Cross-border firing reduced significantly, and civilians in southern Lebanon experienced temporary relief. The international community viewed this as a positive step toward long-term peace. However, this calm proved to be short-lived.

 Phase 2: Allegations of Ceasefire Violations

Soon after, the Israel Defense Forces accused Hezbollah fighters of entering restricted buffer zones and preparing rocket launch sites, which violated the ceasefire terms. In response, Hezbollah and the Lebanese government claimed that Israel itself was breaching the agreement through continuous airstrikes and forced evacuation orders. These mutual accusations quickly eroded trust between both sides.

 Phase 3: Sudden Surge in Violence

As tensions escalated, Israeli airstrikes intensified across southern Lebanon. Several المناطق (areas) were targeted, leading to civilian casualties. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, by April 26, 2026, at least 14 people had been killed, including children. This marked one of the deadliest days since the ceasefire, indicating a sharp deterioration in ground realities.

 Phase 4: Evacuation Orders and Civilian Displacement

Amid rising violence, Israel issued mandatory evacuation orders for multiple towns in southern Lebanon. Thousands of civilians were forced to flee their homes in search of safety. This sudden displacement created a humanitarian concern, as people struggled with access to food, water, shelter, and medical aid. The region began to show signs of a growing humanitarian crisis.

 Phase 5: Intensified Military Actions and Counter-Responses

The Israel Defense Forces stated that it is carrying out “decisive operations” against Hezbollah to eliminate future threats. On the other hand, Hezbollah described Israel’s strikes as aggression and labeled its own actions as a “legitimate response.” Hezbollah also made it clear that it would not adhere to a one-sided ceasefire. This hardened stance on both sides further intensified the conflict.

 Phase 6: Regional and Global Implications

This conflict is no longer just a localized issue. With existing tensions in the Middle East—including Israel-Gaza dynamics and Iran’s involvement—this escalation could destabilize the entire region.
