Prada Launches Kolhapuri-Inspired Sandal Collection After Controversy

28 Apr 2026 Zinkpot

Launch and Collection Highlights
Italian luxury brand Prada has launched a limited-edition sandal collection inspired by traditional Kolhapuri chappals. These sandals are crafted in India by artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern luxury design. The collection is available in select stores and online.

From Controversy to Collaboration
In June 2025, during Milan Fashion Week, Prada faced accusations of cultural appropriation for showcasing designs similar to Kolhapuri chappals. This led to legal notices from LIDCOM and LIDKAR.
The dispute was later resolved, transforming into a formal collaboration between the brand and Indian stakeholders.

Production and Pricing
The collection will include around 2,000 pairs, each priced at approximately ₹85,000. Positioned in the luxury segment, the pricing reflects the brand value, craftsmanship, and exclusivity associated with Prada products.

Artisan Training Initiative
Prada has launched a three-year training program for artisans from eight GI-tagged districts in India. The initiative aims to enhance skills, improve quality standards, and integrate traditional techniques with global fashion trends, giving artisans access to international markets.

Fusion of Craft and Global Design
This collection represents a unique blend of Indian heritage and Italian design. While maintaining the essence of Kolhapuri craftsmanship, the sandals incorporate contemporary styling, making them appealing to global consumers.

Availability and Market Strategy
The collection has been available since February 2026 in limited quantities, emphasizing exclusivity. Prada’s strategy not only strengthens its presence in India but also highlights the potential of local craftsmanship on a global platform.
