In the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, voting was held on 142 seats on April 29. Key regions like Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and South 24 Parganas witnessed polling, with around 32.1 million voters participating.
The biggest focus remains on the Bhabanipur seat, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing a direct challenge from BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. In 2021, Mamata had won this seat by around 58,000 votes. However, she had lost from Nandigram to Adhikari in the same election and later secured her position by winning the Bhabanipur by-election. This time, the seat has once again become a high-stakes battleground.
Looking at the political equation, in the 2021 elections, TMC won 123 seats, while BJP managed 18 seats. For a majority this time, BJP needs to cross the 148-seat mark, requiring a significant gain of over 37 seats.
Ahead of the polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Barrackpore to boost BJP’s campaign, while TMC focused on retaining its stronghold in urban areas.
Now, all eyes are on the results scheduled for May 4, which will determine whether TMC maintains its dominance or BJP manages to pull off a major upset in the state.
