Azerbaijan's recent public support for Pakistan amid heightened tensions with India—particularly following India's Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack—has strained its diplomatic and economic relations with India. This stance, perceived as aligning against Indian interests, has led to significant repercussions.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  1. India-Azerbaijan Trade at Risk : India and Azerbaijan have maintained a modest yet meaningful trade relationship, valued at approximately USD 780 million. However, Azerbaijan's support for Pakistan has prompted Indian citizens and businesses to reconsider their engagements with Azerbaijan. Notably, Indian billionaire Harsh Goenka has called for a boycott of tourism to Azerbaijan and Turkey, estimating a potential Rs 4,000 crore impact on their economies due to decreased Indian tourism.
  2. Energy Sector Implications : Azerbaijan's economy heavily relies on its oil and gas sector, with the Caspian Sea region being a significant source of hydrocarbons. In 2022, Azerbaijan produced approximately 33 million tonnes of oil, underscoring the sector's pivotal role in its economic structure. India's reconsideration of energy ties with Azerbaijan could have substantial implications for Azerbaijan's energy exports.
  3. Tourism and Public Sentiment : The call for a tourism boycott has gained traction among Indian travelers, with reports indicating a 60% drop in bookings and a 250% surge in cancellations for trips to Azerbaijan. Travel platforms like MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip have reported significant increases in cancellations, with many Indian tourists opting for alternative destinations such as Georgia, Serbia, Greece, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  4. Strategic and Diplomatic Considerations : India's close relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan's regional rival, further complicate the geopolitical landscape. Azerbaijan's alignment with Pakistan, especially in the context of India's internal security concerns, has led to a reevaluation of bilateral ties. The situation underscores the intricate balance between diplomatic relations and economic interests in the region.

In summary, Azerbaijan's support for Pakistan has introduced significant strains in its relationship with India, potentially jeopardizing trade worth USD 780 million, affecting its energy exports, and leading to a substantial decline in Indian tourism. The developments highlight the interconnectedness of geopolitical stances and economic consequences.
