What is a DIGIPIN? EXPLAINED

WHAT?

 

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a geospatial addressing system launched by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, India, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).

 

Introduced as part of the National Geospatial Policy 2022, it aims to provide precise, standardized digital addresses to enhance location-based services across India.

 

Key Features of DIGIPIN

 

  1. India’s territory is divided into 4m x 4m grids, each assigned a unique DIGIPIN derived from its coordinates. A 10-character alphanumeric code assigned to 4m x 4m geographical grids across India, based on precise latitude and longitude coordinates. Unlike the 6-digit PIN code, which covers broad areas (e.g., neighborhoods), DIGIPIN pinpoints specific locations with high accuracy.
  2. It enables accurate location identification for services like e-commerce deliveries, emergency response (e.g., ambulances, fire services), disaster management, smart city initiatives, and KYC verification. It supports Address-as-a-Service (AaaS) for secure address data management.
  3. The system is open-source and interoperable, with publicly available code for fetching and decoding DIGIPINs.
  4. It functions offline, making it accessible in areas with limited internet connectivity.
  5. Coverage: Applies to all areas, including urban, rural, and maritime regions, even where traditional addresses are unavailable.
  6. Privacy: Encodes only geographic coordinates, containing no personal or private data, ensuring user privacy.

How to access DIGIPIN?

 

Available via the “Know Your DIGIPIN” portal (https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home). Users can obtain their DIGIPIN by enabling GPS or manually entering coordinates.


 

Comparison with PIN Code

 

  1. PIN Code: Introduced in 1972, it identifies larger areas (e.g., post office jurisdictions) with a 6-digit code, lacking precision for specific locations.
  2. DIGIPIN: Offers granular accuracy for individual buildings or points within a 4m x 4m grid. It complements, not replaces, the PIN code system.
