What is NFDP?
The National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) is a big online system made by the Indian government to help people in the fishing and fish farming business.
It started on September 11, 2024, and it's like a one-stop shop for fishermen, sellers, and companies to get help from the government. NFDP is a website and app where people in the fisheries world can sign up and create a digital ID.
This ID is based on their work, like if they catch fish, grow fish, or sell them. The platform makes a big list (database) of all these people and groups. It's run by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
It's part of a bigger plan called Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), which is inside another big scheme, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). PMMSY is all about making fishing better in India, and PM-MKSSY helps with money, insurance, and more for small fish businesses.
The main purpose of NFDP is to make the fishing sector more organized, modern, and easier to manage. Right now, many fishermen in India struggle to get help from banks or the government because there are no proper records of who they are or what they do.
NFDP solves this problem by giving every fisherman and fish farmer a digital identity, which helps the government understand their needs and plan support better. Through this platform, fishermen can apply for bank loans, get insurance for fish farms, and join stronger co-operative groups.
It also gives rewards to people doing good work and helps track fish from source to sale to ensure they’re safe to eat. Along with this, NFDP provides training and guidance to improve fishing methods and make the industry smarter and more sustainable.
Using the NFDP platform is very simple and user-friendly. Anyone involved in the fishing or fish farming business can visit the website (nfdp.dof.gov.in) or download the NFDP mobile app from Google Play Store to get started. You can register either as an individual, like a fisherman or fish farmer, or as a group or organization, such as a fishermen’s cooperative, company, or producer group.
To sign up, users can log in using a password or an OTP (one-time password) sent to their mobile phone. If you don’t already have a password, the platform gives you an easy option to create one. The entire process is free, simple, and designed to help even people who are not very familiar with technology. For those who face any issues, there is a toll-free helpline number where trained staff can assist step by step.
By March 2025, more than 20 lakh (2 million) people and organizations had already registered on NFDP, showing how quickly it is expanding. The states leading in registration include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Kerala, where fishing is a major occupation.
By November 2025, these numbers are expected to grow even higher, especially as government teams promote registration drives during major programs like the National Marine Fisheries Census 2025. This strong participation shows how NFDP is becoming a key digital tool for India’s fishermen to connect with banks, insurance, and government support.
The National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) has several key features that make it truly useful for people working in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.
It’s also connected to other government programs, such as fish farm insurance schemes, safety certification systems for fish products, and training programs for better fishing practices. This makes NFDP a one-stop platform for all fisheries-related services.
Another big advantage is that both the website and mobile app work in multiple Indian languages. This multilingual feature ensures that fishermen from every region — whether from coastal states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu or inland states like Assam and Bihar — can easily use it without any language barriers. Overall, these key parts make NFDP not just a registration tool but a complete digital ecosystem for India’s fisheries sector.
The National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) is open for everyone involved in the fishing and fish farming sector across India. It doesn’t matter whether you live near the sea, a river, or an inland area — anyone connected to fisheries can use it.
In short, NFDP is for everyone in the fisheries value chain — from the person who catches the fish to the company that sells it in the market. It covers both coastal regions like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, as well as inland states such as Assam, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, making it a truly national platform.
NFDP works with the National Marine Fisheries Census 2025, which is counting fishermen digitally. During the census launch in October 2025, the minister asked fishermen to sign up on NFDP to get benefits. It's all part of making fishing smarter and safer with tech. The government has spent money on this – PM-MKSSY has ₹6,000 crore for four years.
