  6. This summit was important for India, as it was the first in-person meeting since the India-China military standoff at the LAC. After the bilateral talks between the PM of India and the President of China, both nations have agreed to step up efforts for the disengagement of troops and de-escalation of tensions along the LAC.
  7. India announced that it sees BRICS as a non-western, rather than an anti-western group, emphasizing the platforms’ diversity of perspectives, much against the perception that BRICS discussions carry a counter-western perspective.
  8. Brazilian President Lula da Silva clarified that BRICS aimed to organize the Global South and wasn’t meant to rival established powers like the United States and G7 economies.
  9. The Indian PM proposed to establish a BRICS space exploration consortium to advance cooperation in the field of space technology and research.

  13. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the need for global financial institutions to undergo reform to better address the challenges faced by developing economies.
  14. In the run-up to the summit, it was disclosed that more than 40 countries had applied for membership in BRICS. China and Russia were eager to expand the group as an alternative to the US-led groupings, especially the G7. There was wide speculation that India and Brazil, though not opposed to the expansion, were cautious and wanted to first decide the criteria.
