Rs 78,213 crore in unclaimed bank deposits: Govt to speed up refunds

As of March 2024, deposits left unclaimed in banks, insurance plans, mutual funds, pension, and securities collectively amount to around ₹78,213 crore 

  1. Government Push for Refund Acceleration : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the 29th Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) meeting on June 10, 2025, urged the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, MCA, and other agencies to speed up refunds to rightful owners 
  2. District‑level Camps for Outreach : She directed regulators to organize special district‑level camps—coordinated with banks, pension providers, insurers, etc.—to facilitate claimants in recovering their funds 
  3. Unified & Digital KYC Process : To simplify access, a standardized, digitized KYC framework across all financial institutions is in the works—potentially including digital onboarding for NRIs/PIOs—aimed at making claims seamless 
  4. Online Claim System by FY26 : A working group led by public sector banks has proposed using a common application and documentation template, with full online claims functionality expected by FY2026 
  5. Macro‑financial Context : The FSDC also addressed broader themes like financial stability, cybersecurity resilience, strengthened inter‑regulatory coordination, and the timely execution of past budgetary reforms
