Darjeeling tea woes deepen, pushing industry to an existential crisis

20 May 2025 Zinkpot 110

The Darjeeling tea industry is currently facing an existential crisis, as detailed in a recent Business Standard article.

Key Challenges Facing the Industry

  1. Economic Pressures: High production costs, driven by rising labor expenses and declining yields, have made it difficult for producers to compete with cheaper alternatives.
  2. Labor Issues: The industry is grappling with labor absenteeism and a shortage of skilled workers, affecting the quality and quantity of tea produced.
  3. Climate Change: Adverse weather conditions have disrupted traditional harvesting cycles, leading to reduced output and quality.
  4. Market Competition: The influx of lower-cost teas from Nepal, often blended and sold as Darjeeling tea, has diluted the brand's reputation and market share.
  5. Brand Dilution: The blending of Darjeeling tea with inferior teas has eroded consumer trust and the premium status of the brand.

Government Intervention

In response to these challenges, the West Bengal government has announced the formation of a task force and the establishment of a laboratory to detect and prevent the mixing of Darjeeling tea with inferior alternatives. This initiative aims to protect the authenticity and reputation of Darjeeling tea, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. What is a Patent or GI tag? click here

The government is also emphasizing the need for branding all 87 operational Darjeeling tea gardens to strengthen the global identity of authentic Darjeeling tea. These measures are part of a broader effort to safeguard and revitalize the Darjeeling tea industry, ensuring its sustainability and preserving its unique heritage.
