CONTEXT
In October 2025, Elon Musk publicly called on his followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. He argued that Netflix was promoting content harmful to children and pushing a “transgender woke agenda.”
Musk claimed he had already canceled his account and encouraged others to follow suit.
This was not just a random social media outburst — it followed a wave of criticism aimed at specific Netflix shows, particularly Dead End: Paranormal Park, and allegations against its creator. The campaign gained rapid traction online, influencing sentiment, media narratives, and investor
What triggered Musk’s Call?
- Backlash over Dead End: Paranormal Park & Trans Representation : The controversy began when a social media account, Libs of TikTok, posted screenshots claiming that Dead End: Paranormal Park contained themes promoting transgender identity to children. The show’s lead character is transgender, and critics argued that such representation was inappropriate for young viewers. Musk amplified this view, reposting the criticism and writing: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.” The show itself premiered in 2022 and was canceled in 2023, but the discussion revived with new intensity.
- Controversy Around the Creator, Hamish Steele : Beyond content, the campaign targeted the show’s creator, Hamish Steele. Critics accused him of making disparaging remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death, and of mocking political figures. These claims intensified the backlash, although many of them are contested or unverified. Steele denied celebrating Kirk’s death and stated he had faced harassment and misrepresentation online.
- Musk’s Broader Stance Against “Woke Culture” : This move fits within Musk’s longer pattern of criticizing “woke ideology,” progressive content, and what he sees as cultural overreach by tech and media platforms. He has previously positioned himself as a counter to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) movements.
His call to cancel Netflix is part protest, part signaling — aiming not just to criticize but to mobilize those who share his views.
The Reaction: Market, Media & Subscriber Fallout
Investors responded swiftly. Over consecutive sessions, Netflix shares fell 2.3% then 2.9%, as the backlash intensified. Analysts linked these drops to sentiment shifts as well as fears of subscriber losses. Some reports estimate Netflix lost ~$5.3 billion in one trading session (about a 1.05% drop).
Others extend the lens to a multi-day window and report losses of $15 billion or $17 billion linked to the boycott.
Netflix itself has not issued a detailed response so far in public.
