What Is ASIA PACIFIC ECO COOPERATION (APEC)?

04 Nov 2025 Zinkpot 448

What is APEC?

APEC is more like a forum where countries meet to share ideas and agree on ways to help each other. The main goal is to create more jobs and better lives for people in the Asia-Pacific area by making trade free and fair.It started with the idea that if countries trade more openly, everyone wins. APEC helps reduce taxes on goods (tariffs), make rules simpler for businesses, and share new tech. It's all about "cooperation" – working together for everyone's good.

History of APEC

  • APEC began in 1989 in Canberra, Australia. At first, 12 countries joined because they saw that Asia and the Pacific were growing fast economically. Leaders wanted to keep that growth going by talking regularly.
  • In 1993, the first big meeting with presidents and prime ministers happened in the USA. That's when APEC became more important. In 1994, in Bogor, Indonesia, they set the "Bogor Goals": to have free trade and investment by 2010 for rich countries and 2020 for others.
  • Over time, more countries joined, and now there are 21 members. APEC has helped during tough times, like the 1997 Asian money crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, by sharing tips on health and economy.

APEC Members and Goals

APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) has 21 member economies, not called “countries” because places like Hong Kong and Taiwan are also included even though they aren’t fully recognized nations. The members are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Together, these economies represent about 60% of the world’s GDP and half of global trade, meaning whatever happens in APEC impacts the global economy. Since 1998, no new members have been added due to a membership freeze, but countries like India and Colombia have shown interest in joining.

APEC’s main goals include promoting free trade by cutting import taxes, encouraging investment across borders, ensuring sustainable growth through clean energy, supporting inclusive growth for women, small businesses, and poorer regions, driving innovation in technology such as AI and digital trade, and improving security to protect global commerce from fake goods and cyber threats. It also works on major global issues like climate change, food safety, and women’s participation in business.

How does the APEC Work?

  • APEC meets every year. The host country changes each time – like a rotating party. Leaders (presidents or prime ministers) meet at the end for the big summit. Before that, ministers and experts talk in smaller groups.
  • There's a secretariat in Singapore that helps organize everything. Decisions are made by agreement – no voting or forcing anyone.
  • Business people also join through the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), giving advice to leaders.

Achievements of APEC

  • Since starting, APEC has cut trade taxes by a lot – from 17% in 1989 to about 5% now. This made trade grow five times!
  • They helped make rules for digital trade, like online shopping across borders. During COVID, APEC shared ways to keep trade going safely.
  • APEC also trains people, like teaching small businesses how to export. It has projects for clean oceans, better farming, and fighting corruption.

Current Status and Future

  • In 2025, South Korea is hosting APEC. The theme is about building a "connected, innovative, and inclusive" future. Leaders will talk about recovery from global problems, green growth, and digital changes.
  • The summit starts on October 31, 2025, in Seoul. With tensions like US-China trade wars, APEC is key for keeping talks open.
  • Looking ahead, APEC wants to update the Bogor Goals for 2040, focusing on sustainability and equality. It's shifting more to Asia as the world's economic center moves there.
