Maruti's Jimny finds bumper demand in Japan

04 Jul 2025 Zinkpot 715

WHAT?

The success of Suzuki Motor Corp.'s India-made Jimny Nomad has propelled the company past Mercedes-Benz to become Japan's top car importer in June 2025. However, this export success contrasts with a domestic sales decline for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, its subsidiary.

Key Details

  • Export Success: The five-door Jimny Nomad, launched in Japan in April 2025, received 50,000 pre-orders within days, exceeding the monthly target of 1,200 units, leading to a temporary halt in bookings. Priced at ¥2.65 million ($18,300), its demand, alongside the India-made Fronx SUV (introduced in October 2024), drove Suzuki’s imports to 4,780 units in June, a 230-fold increase from the previous year, surpassing Mercedes-Benz’s 4,730 units.
  • Production Boost: Suzuki plans to ramp up Jimny Nomad production at its Indian facilities from July 2025 to meet demand, leveraging India’s lower labor and production costs.
  • Domestic Decline: Maruti Suzuki reported a 6% year-on-year drop in total sales to 167,993 units in June 2025, down from 179,228 units in June 2024. This includes a decline in utility vehicles (47,947 units vs. 52,373) and a notable slowdown in the smaller car segment, attributed to affordability issues amid a 70% price rise since 2019 due to safety and emissions regulations.
  • Export Growth: Maruti’s exports rose to 37,842 units from 31,033, with the Jimny and Fronx leading shipments to Japan, now its second-largest export market after South Africa.

Implications

  • Global Reach: India’s role as a manufacturing hub strengthens, aligning with the "Make in India" initiative, though domestic demand shifts toward SUVs challenge smaller carmakers.
  • Market Dynamics: The Jimny’s success in Japan highlights consumer preference for compact SUVs, while Maruti faces pressure to adapt to India’s changing market, where Hyundai’s Creta led June sales with 15,786 units.
  • Economic Context: The sales drop coincides with a 1.2% IIP growth in May 2025, suggesting broader industrial slowdown, though export growth offsets some domestic weakness.
