What is ZED?

The Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) scheme is an Indian government program started in 2016 to help small and medium businesses (called MSMEs) make high-quality products without harming the environment. The name "Zero Defect" means products should have no mistakes or flaws, and "Zero Effect" means the manufacturing process should not pollute or damage nature, like reducing waste and using clean energy.

It was launched by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Indian companies more competitive in the world market. The goal is to encourage better quality control, safety, and eco-friendly practices in factories.

Key Features

  1. Certification Levels: MSMEs can get rated at Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, or Platinum based on their performance in areas like quality management, safety, energy use, environment protection, and more. It's based on 10 key areas with 20 mandatory checks and optional ones.
  2. Assessment Process: Starts with online registration and self-assessment, followed by desktop review, on-site checks, and optional gap analysis or handholding support for up to 6 months.
  3. Training and Support: Includes awareness programs, workshops, training for staff and experts, and consultancy to implement ZED practices, especially in remote areas like Northeast India or Jammu & Kashmir.
  4. Financial Incentives: Subsidies on costs (up to 80% for micro businesses, more for women-owned or SC/ST enterprises), lower loan interest rates, and rewards for high performers.
  5. Voluntary and Inclusive: Open to all manufacturing MSMEs registered in India; focuses on benchmarking with international standards and using online tools for easy access.

Objectives of the ZED Scheme

  1. To promote high-quality manufacturing with no defects in products (Zero Defect) and no harm to the environment (Zero Effect), like reducing pollution and waste.
  2. To make Indian MSMEs more competitive in the global market by improving quality standards, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly practices.
  3. To encourage continuous improvement in processes, support the "Make in India" initiative, and build awareness about sustainable manufacturing.
  4. To provide financial help for assessments, ratings, and guidance on quality and environment-related improvements.

How It Works

  • Businesses can apply for ZED certification online through the official website.
  • There are three levels: Bronze (basic), Silver (medium), and Gold (advanced), based on how well they meet standards in areas like product quality, worker safety, energy use, and pollution control.
  • Companies get assessed on about 50 parameters, including things like reducing defects, saving resources, and following laws.
  • The government provides training, hand-holding support, and subsidies to help MSMEs improve and get certified.

Benefits

  • It gives MSMEs a quality certification which helps them to compete globally and help the buyers know what quality are they buying.
  • Certified companies can get financial help, like up to 80% subsidy on assessment costs for micro enterprises, and lower interest rates on loans (0.25% to 0.5% off).
  • It helps businesses save money by cutting waste, boost sales with better quality products, and meet international standards for exports.
  • Overall, it aims to create awareness about sustainable manufacturing and make "Made in India" products trusted globally.

Impact

  • Business Improvements: Helps reduce waste, defects, and costs, leading to higher profits, better product quality, and fewer rejections. This makes companies more efficient and attractive to global buyers.
  • Environmental Benefits: Promotes clean practices, like energy savings and less pollution, making manufacturing more sustainable and responsible.
  • Economic Growth: Boosts jobs, supports exports, and strengthens supply chains for big companies. As of recent data, over 600,000 MSMEs have registered, with many getting certified and financial aid worth hundreds of crores.
  • Broader Effects: Increases trust in "Made in India" products, encourages innovation, and helps MSMEs enter international markets. It also provides recognition through awards and better loan terms from banks and states. Overall, it supports India's goal of becoming a global manufacturing hub while protecting the environment.
